News for the Week of May 20, 2013

Program Notes for the Week of 5/20/2013:

Shorepals Meeting:
We have our next Shorepals meeting scheduled for Thursday May 30th at 7:30 p.m. at Las Cazuelas in the Landings. We need to make plans for the Father's Day events and get volunteers for the various committees along with starting to work through to do lists for those committees. Hope to see you there!!

Shoregals Updates:
From time to time we like to update everyone on some noteworthy accomplishments by our soccer girls. In this issue, we have the following to report on:

Track and Field:
Six of our Shoregal soccer players run Track in the Spring as follows:

Claire Jones – Senior – runs a variety of sprint events along with long jump & high jump

Marisa Dzwonczyk – Soph. – she participates in numerous sprint events.

Kayla Kress - Soph. - she also participates in numerous sprint events.

Esther Killius – Soph. – she is a distance runner who has clocked a 5:47 1600 meters already this year.

Lindsay Butler – Fresh. – she is primarily a 400 meter runner.

Emily Herman - Fresh. - her main event is the 100 meter hurdles.

Great job by these girls and best of luck for the remainder of the season.

Northern Ohio Girls Soccer League Scholarship Winner:
We are thrilled to report that senior Claire Jones will be the recipient of a NOGSL scholarship in the amount of $2,000. The scholarship is based on academics, activities, community service, leadership, and an essay on the subject of your most memorable moment playing in the NOGSL. This makes three consecutive years we have had Shoregals receive this scholarship as Claire joins Annie Lyons from last year and Maddie Bernard from 2011.

News for the Week of May 13, 2013

Program Notes for the Week of 5/13/2013:

Shorepals Meeting:
We have our next Shorepals meeting scheduled for Tuesday May 14th at 7:30 p.m. at Las Cazuelas in the Landings.  We need to make plans for the Father's Day events and get volunteers for the various committees along with starting to work through to do lists for those committees. Hope to see you there!!

Happy Mother's Day:
I would like to wish a late Happy Mother's Day to all our Shoregal moms who really make this program work and have given me a lot of assistance over the years.  I came across a post on a soccer blog that I would like to share with everyone by an individual named Jack Heffron:

Say Thanks to Soccer Mom

By Jack Heffron on May 11, 2012.

The soccer mom. We all know her. She’s the frazzled-looking gal wheeling the minivan or SUV into the parking lot next to the fields behind the school. As the door flings open and a handful of kids tumble out, she shouts things like “Don’t forget your water bottle” and “I’m taking your sister to her practice and then I’ll be back.”

According to the stereotype, she’s sort of dull and conventional. Her life is mostly a matter of quickly prepared dinners and frantically rushing around the neighborhood dropping off and picking up kids at their games and practices.

It’s a stereotype so pervasive that we know longer actually see these real-life women in their countless variety. Nor do we appreciate enough all the things they do to keep the youth sports wheels turning. Without them, in fact, those wheels surely would grind to a halt. They take care of their own kids and keep an eye out for every member of the team. They can be counted on to cheer, to provide post-game snacks, to make sure the kids are hydrated and safe and happy. They keep score. Some are coaches. All are invaluable.

With Mother’s Day coming up, I thought we should take a few minutes to truly see these women and to say thank you.  On Mother’s Day, thank the Soccer Moms who you know. It’s not always a fun job, and gratitude is rarely part of it.

Video of the Week:
We are going to continue with videos from the past season and this week we will be featuring another JV game. This game was against North Olmsted and the Shoregals came out on top in this one by a score of 1-0. The game winning goal was scored by Casey Baughman and assisted by Kayla Kress at the 15:30 mark in Part 3.

News for the Week of May 6, 2013

Program Notes for the Week of 5/6/2013:

The Jim Niebes Memorial 5K Run:
Wanted to pass along some news involving two former players in the Shoregal program - sisters Shannon & Erin Niebes.  Shannon was a member of the first two Shoregal teams in 1993 & 1994 and her sister Erin was a four year Varsity player from 1995 -1998 and is still ranked amongst the all time leaders in goals, assists, & points scored.  Sadly, this story involves the death of their father Jim Niebes from kidney cancer in Sept. of 2012.  However, as you will read in the attached article, they have been holding a 5K race in his honor in Avon Lake since 2010 with the proceeds benefitting the Kidney Cancer Assn.  This year's race is on Sat. May 11th at Weiss field.

Alumni Game:
We want to give our Alumni plenty of time to make plans, so we are going to announce that our annual Alumni Reunion game & Picnic will be held this year on Sat. July 13, 2013. We are going to try something new with the location this year and move it over to the ALHS stadium field. Many of our Alumni have not seen or played on the new artificial turf and renovated stadium. Game will start around 4:00 p.m. with the picnic at 5:30 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Soccer Camp:
We are going to add something new for this summer - both the boys and the girls teams will be holding a joint youth soccer camp. The camp will be primarily targeted towards players in the ALSO system and, of course, players from other communities would be welcome also. The dates will be 7/29 -7/31 and will run from 8 - 11 am. More details to come.

Video of the Week:
We are going to continue with videos from the past season and this week we are going to feature our first JV game video.  The game was against Sylvania Northview and after a back and forth battle, the Shoregals came out on top by a score of 3-2.  Goals were scored by Elise Duvall on a 35 yd free kick at the 2:45 mark of Part 2, Kayla Kress at the 3:50 mark of Part 2, and the game winner by Maggie Moore at the 16:40 mark of Part 3.
