Postseason Awards:
The postseason awards will be announced over the next few weeks. This week I would like to spotlight Head Coach Kiko Lopez:
Avon Lake girls soccer coach Kiko Lopez was named the 2010 Division I Coach of the Year by the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association at their recent meeting. Kiko's Shoregals compiled a 12-4-1 record this Fall and were ranked #5 in the final GCSSCA poll this season. In his 4th year at the helm, Kiko has amassed a record of 47 wins 18 losses 7 ties for a winning percentage of 70%. The 47 wins puts Kiko into a tie with former coach Tom Greene for the most victories in program history. Kiko also now owns the highest career winning percentage and the best career Southwestern Conference records for the girls soccer program.
In addition, Lopez was recently named 2010 Southwestern Conference Coach of the Year. The Shoregals were undefeated Southwestern Conference champions at 6-0-1. This was the first conference crown in the 18 year history of the program.
Kiko has had prior head coaching stints at both Berea High School and St. Ed's along with several club teams. Previously, he has been named 2008 Lorain County Soccer Coaches Assn. Div. 1 Coach of the Year and 2003 LCSCA Div. 1 Coach of the Year along with 2003 OYSAN Girls Coach of the Year for his work with youth soccer teams. A familiar name in Cleveland soccer circles, Kiko is the director of Kiko's Dribbling School & camps and has trained many of the best players in Northeastern Ohio. Kiko honed his soccer skills in the El Salvador 1st & 2nd divisions. His daughter Tani was an All-Ohio player last year and is now on the Ashland University soccer team. A younger daughter, Mariella is working her way up through the youth soccer & club ranks and will be a Shoregal in the near future. Congrats to Coach Kiko!!!
Cudos Corner:
Special thanks go to Betsy Mielcusny, Linda Gates, and Ingrid Mills for their work with the concession stand this year. We had a good year sales wise at the stand and that can be attributed to the coordination of the aforementioned moms and all those who volunteered to work in the stand this year. An appreciative thanks to all!!!
