News for the week of January 17,2010
Program notes for the week of 1/17:
We are back after the Christmas break and here's hoping everyone had a wonderful holiday season! Now to the business of Shoregal soccer...
More Postseason awards
One last award to report upon from the past season as Jillian Strimbu was named to the All-Sun newspapers soccer team - Congrats to Jillian!!
Indoor soccer
We had a terrific response for our indoor soccer program this year as 50 girls signed up to play second session at the Sportsplex including 19 incoming eighth graders. The games have already started and the Shoregals are playing very well together.
Remember to watch your schedules closely as there will be games on Martin Luther King Day on 1/17.
Soccer Video:
For any one who may be interested and through the generous sportmanship of North Olmsted parents, we have copies the SWC title clinching game vs. N.O. Down 3-1, the Shoregals stormed back with 3 goals by Emily O'Connor in the final 20 minutes to pull out a heartpounding 4-3 victory and clinch the first confernece championship in the 18 year history of the girls soccer program. Please contact me as I have additional copies available.
Soccer Site of the Week:
This is a new feature where we will present a website each week with information about training, nutrition, skills, drills, and anything else pertaining to soccer. This week's spotlighted site is:
http://www.finesoccer.com/
This site is loaded with books and DVD's related to soccer training. But probably the best part of the site are the free newsletters. They have 7 different newsletters to pick from covering every aspect of soccer including goaltending. You can sign up online and they will be delivered to your e-mail address each week and again - it's all free!!
M.L. King Day:
This is traditionally an off day from school and for some people an off day from work and it is also a day where most of us are involved in indoor soccer. For those who may want to take a few minutes aside to honor Dr. King's life you can view his most famous "I Have a Dream" speech at http://www.youtube.com/ - it is only about 17 minutes long or you can view a complete transcript at www.usconstitution.net/dream. You can google on various other specches and biographical data also.

First draft of the 2011 season schedule:
Here is a preliminary look at the schedule for Fall 2011. There are still 3 non-conference games to be added which we will inform you about later.
8/24 - at Berea
8/27 - Avon
8/31 - Westlake
9/7 - at Amherst
9/12 - Valley Forge
9/14 - at Midpark
9/21 - Olmsted Falls
9/24 - Lake Catholic
9/26 - Rocky River
9/28 - at North Olmsted
10/3 - at Strongsville
10/5 - Brecksville Bees
10/8 - Magnificat
Indoor Soccer:
This is what we can report so far - we have had about 46 girls sign up at this point and the coaches are leaning towards forming 4 teams. I should have rosters and final costs available this week.
National Champions!!!!
They did it!! - The University of Akron mens's team won the NCAA Division I championship this past weekend by beating the Louisville 1-0 in the College Cup final. A great victory that proves the point that the possession style that both Akron plays and that Kiko teaches the girls can win championships and that there is an alternative to the physical, defensive oriented play that many coaches seem to prefer.
Christmas Break:
We will take a little holiday break over the next two weeks to recharge the batteries and enjoy the season. Be watching in the new year as our weekly blogs will resume packed with info. about the Shoregals and soccer in general.
Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday season to all our soccer families and fans!!!

Program notes for the week of 12/6:
Indoor Soccer:
We should have more information about indoor soccer available this week. Watch your e-mail for more details. We can report on this much so far - We had 42 girls sign up for 2nd session at the Sportsplex, so we will field 3 teams. Kiko will be assigning the girls to specific teams and naming the coaches shortly.
Regarding the Oberlin 3 v. 3 tournament, we will field three teams at that tournament and Coach Daegen will be coordinating the player pool.
Hang the Banners...
The year "2010" has now been added to the Girls Soccer banner in the ALHS competition gym. There was a cell phone video taken of the moment and I am trying to figure out how to get it into a format for this site. Keep watching in future weeks. So take notice the next time you go into the gym - hopefully when you are there supporting the Shoregal Bball team. It took 18 years to hang this banner, hopefully we will be adding many more years in the near future.
Are you ready for some Futbol??
The Men's College Cup will be this week in Santa Barbara, CA. The semifinal games on Friday will pit the Akron Zips vs. Michigan at 11:00 p.m. on ESPN2 and Louisville vs. North Carolina at 8:30 p.m. The championship is set for Sunday 12/12 at 4:00 p.m.on ESPN2. Of course, I am very partial to the Univ. of Akron and they play some of the most artisitic soccer that you will see. A real clinic for all young players to watch. Go Zips!!!
Cudos Corner:
Special thanks to Vic Stirmbu for putting together the season highlight DVD once again this year, he always does a great job with the DVD. Also thanks to Vic & Debbie Strimbu for hosting the end of season party and DVD showing at their home.

News for the Week of November 29, 2010
Program Notes for the week of 11/29:
The team continues to be recognized for their efforts during this postseason period and this past week was when the academic awards were announced.
Academic All-America:
I am very excited to announce that the Shoregals were awarded Team Academic All-America status for the 2009-2010 school year this past week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
This is the highest academic honor that high school soccer teams may receive in the country. Avon Lake was one of only 243 teams nationwide (less than 5 per state) to receive this prestigious award and the team GPA was 3.93. To qualify for the award, a team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The Shoregals also received this award in 2008 and are on track to receive it again for the current academic year next November.
Academic All-Ohio:
The team was also named Academic All-Ohio for 2010 by the Ohio Scholastic Coaches Association.
Scholar Athletes:
The team Scholar-Athlete award which goes to the senior with the highest GPA was presented to Maddie Bernard for the 2010 season and Alison Kenny was the recipient from the 2009 season.
Collegiate Academic All-America:
In addition, Trisha Wladecki who was a former Shoregal and an individual Academic All-American in 2008 as well as part of the Avon Lake team award has continued her strong academic performance with the Valparaiso women's soccer team. The Valpo women's team has been awarded Team Academic All-America status for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Congratulations to all our Shoregal scholars!! It is a pleasure to be able to report not only successes on the field but also in the classroom as well. The girls soccer program has a legacy of achievement that continues with each new generation of players and is truly something to be admired.

News for the Week of November 22, 2010
Progam Notes for the week of 11/22:
Happy Thanksgiving to all our soccer families!!!
We had a lot to be thankful this year soccer-wise - we had a dedicated group of girls who not only achieved on the field, but in the classroom as well. We had supportive parents building the program behind the scenes and we had enthusiastic coaches working with the girls on the field. We are definitely thankful for putting this all together to win the first SWC championship in the 18 year history of the program.
Indoor Soccer:
By this time you should have seen some e-mails come out about our plans for the second session of indoor soccer. We will be playing at the Sportsplex once again this winter. If you have not contacted John Kenny, please do so as soon as possible as we are putting together the player pool now and there are still spots available.
Postseason Awards:
The accolades continue to roll in for our fine season. This week the All Morning Journal teams were announced and the following Shoregals were recognized:
First Team All-Journal:
Jillian Strimbu
Second Team All-Journal:
Emily O'Connor
Congrats to these girls!!
Postseason Banquet:
Well, when you win you get perks and one of those perks is having an awards dinner in recognition of the SWC championship. The banquet was held last Wednesday 11/17 and the reports that I have received tell me that it went off very well. See a picture from the evening in the ShoreGallery. Very well deserved by this group of girls who were also outstanding in the classroom. I believe it was reported that the Varsity team GPA was 4.01 for this past year. That is an amazing number as that indicates that the average was over 4.00. Also congratulations to Maddie Bernard on being named team Scholar-Athlete.
Tidbits:
Kind of lost in the shuffle this year was the fact that the girls soccer program recorded its 16th consecutive winning season. That combined with a tradition of extremely high academic performance really has made an impressive legacy for girls soccer at Avon Lake. The girls soccer team along with the girls cross country team over the history of their programs have the best combination of athletic success along with academic achievement of any athletic team at Avon Lake. It is shame that they don't receive more recognition of their superior efforts.
