News for the Week of April 25, 2011

Program Notes for the Week of 4/25/2011:

Player Updates:
From time to time we like to mention noteworthy accomplishments by our team members.  This week we would like recognize two players who will be going to the Regional ODP camp this summer.  Those players are freshman Emily O'Connor and incoming freshman Sarah Nasr.   The Olympic Development Program (ODP) was established in 1977 as a nationwide process dedicated to the identification and training of players for state, regional, and national teams.  The United States is divided into 4 regions and youth soccer in this area is part of the Ohio North association which is a part of Region II.  This region is comprised of 14 states in the Midwest and encompasses 850,000 soccer players.

Emily O'Connor is a member of the 1995 age group State team for Ohio which consists of 18 players and Sarah Nasr is a member of the 1997 age group State team which consists of 35 players.   These State team members are then invited each summer to a Regional ODP camp in DeKalb, Ill. where they train and compete for a spot on the Regional team.  So, you can see that it is quite an honor to make the State team and be invited to the Regional camp as only a small pct. of all the girls playing are selected for these teams.
Congrats to Emily & Sarah!!

Shorepals Meeting:
The next Shorepals meeting will be held on Thursday May 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Firehouse at the corner of Lake Rd. & Rt. 83.  We will be discussing our preparations for Father's Day along with the Alumni picnic and the Teambuilding outing plus many other activities.

News for the Week of April 18,2011

Program Notes for the Week of 4/18/2011:

Coaching News:
We are pleased to announce that Jessica Roberts has been officially approved and hired as part of the Avon Lake coaching staff for next season.  It looks as if she will be the head coach for the Freshman team.  Jessica comes to us with an impressive list of credentials.  She played her high school soccer at Strongsville High where she played on a State Championship team in 2002 and reached the finals again in 2003 where Strongsville ended up as State Runners-up.  Along the way she collected numerous awards for her play in the midfield including being named the first High School All American in Strongsville girls soccer history.  During her senior year of 2003, she was also named All-Region, All-State - 1st team, All-Greater Cleveland Player of the Year and also was a 1st team selection, and was the MVP of the old Pioneer Conference. WOW!!!

After graduation, she attended The Ohio State University where she played on the Varsity for two seasons and was named Academic All-Big 10 and received the OSU Scholar Athlete award.

Jessica currently serves as the Intervention Specialist at Troy Intermediate school.  We are very excited about the knowledge that Jessica can bring to our program and also the positive role model she will be for the girls.

In other coaching news, Cait Bodzioney will not be returning to the sidelines this Fall as she is moving on to some bigger things in her life.  She is recently engaged and will be planning her upcoming wedding.  I know the girls enjoyed her presence during the last season and she was part of the first conference championship in program history.  Best Wishes to "Bodz"!!!

http://www.ncaa.org/

This is where to get recruiting and eligibility rules for all Division 1,2,& 3 programs.  When you enter the website, hit the Eligibility Center tab and follow the directions from there.  Be sure to look at or print out the Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete.  This summarizes pretty much eveything you need to know about the college recruiting process.  Remember that you cannot play Division 1 or Division 2 athletics without being registered with the Eligibility Center, so it is important that you understand what will be required.

News for the Week of April 4, 2011

Program Notes for the Week of 4/4/2011:

Schedule Update:
The 16th game has now been added and it will be against Sylvania Northview on Sat. Oct. 15th.  The complete schedule for the Fall will now look as follows:

8/24 - at Berea
8/27 - Avon
8/31 - Westlake
9/7 - at Amherst
9/12 - Valley Forge
9/14 - at Midpark
9/19 - at Hathaway Brown
9/21 - Olmsted Falls
9/24 - Lake Catholic
9/26 - Rocky River
9/28 - at North Olmsted
10/3 - at Strongsville
10/5 - Brecksville (Senior Night)
10/8 - Magnificat
10/10 - Solon
10/15 - at Sylvania Northview

A few comments about the schedule - this schedule will be the most difficult in the history of the program.  On this year's schedule we have a State runner-up in Hathaway Brown, a Regional champion in Strongsville, one District champion (Westlake), and 3 District Finalsits (Rocky River, Solon, & Sylvania Northview).  Nine of the teams won 11 games or more last season and the total winning percentage of all the teams combined on the schedule is 61% - WOW!   It says a lot about how far this program has come that we now have the talent that can compete against a high level of competition.

Shorepal Meeting:
The next meeting for the Shorepals has been scheduled for Thursday April 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Firehouse which is located at the corner of Lake Rd. and RT. 83. At the meeting, we will be reviewing our programming for the 2011 season.

Recruiting Night:
Once again, I would like to remind everyone of the program that ALHS is putting on entitled "The Student-Athlete and College Recruiting" on Monday April 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the ALHS Performing Arts Center. This is another resource for people to get more information about scholarships and playing sports in college.
