News for the Week of Nov. 26, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 11/26/2012:

Over the next few weeks we will recap the past season with awards, stats and other fun facts.  There was an academic award announced last week after the awards assembly had taken place that we want everyone to be aware of:

We are very excited to announce that the girls were awarded Team Academic All-America status for the 2011-2012 school year this past week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). This is the highest academic honor that high school soccer teams may receive in the country.

Avon Lake was one of only 223 teams nationwide (about 4 per state) to receive this prestigious award and the team GPA was an outstanding 4.15!  Furthermore, Avon Lake had the tenth highest team GPA in the country and of the 24 schools in Ohio which received the award, the Shoregals had the highest GPA in the state! Also, Avon Lake was the only Lorain County school to be awarded Team Academic All-America status and the girls had the highest GPA in the Southwestern Conference.

To qualify for the award, a team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The way that this award is figured is based on the fact that a number of states play Spring soccer only and in order to include all states the NSCAA waits until after the Spring season is completed to determine the award winners. That is why the award for last year is just being announced in late November of this year. This was actually last year's team that won the award and would include last year's 12 graduated seniors.  This year's team is also on track to receive Academic All-America status again for the current academic year next November. The Shoregals also received this award in 2011, 2010, & 2008.

In addition, Trisha Wladecki who was a former Shoregal and an individual Academic All-American in 2008 as well as part of the Avon Lake team award has continued her strong academic performance with the Valparaiso women's soccer team.  The Valpo women's team has been awarded Team Academic All-America status for the 2011-2012 academic year of which Trisha was a member.

Congratulations to all our Shoregal scholars!!  It is a pleasure to be able to report not only successes on the field, but also in the classroom as well.  The girls soccer program has a legacy of achievement that continues with each new generation of players and is truly something to be admired.

Let's look at games played stats this week:

News for the Week of Nov. 19, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 11/19/2012:

Over the next few weeks we will recap the past season with awards, stats and other fun facts. This week let's recap the Lorain County All Star Game:

Lorain County All Star Game:
This game was played this past Saturday 11/17 at Midview High School. Representing the Shoregals were seniors Christine Gates, Kailey McClain, & Claire Jones and they shined a very positive light on our program.  Claire Jones scored 3 goals in a six minute span of the 1st half to lead her Red team to a 5-4 victory over the Blue team. Kailey McClain assisted on Jones' third goal and Christine Gates played her usual reliable defense.  A nice way to close out their careers on a high note!

Alright - Let's look at some team stats this week:

All Time Records:
For a little fun and to satisfy some curiosity, over the next several weeks we will present our all time record against various opponents.

North Olmsted  6 wins - 14 losses - 6 ties - While they have had the upper hand in this series during their heyday, the shootout win in this year's playoffs was their first victory against us since 2005.

Olmsted Falls  15-7-0 - We have won 15 of the past 16 games against this SWC rival.

Magnificat  5-9-1 - A very even series until the last three years in which Mags has won each year.

News for the Week of Nov. 12, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 11/12/2012:

Over the next few weeks we will recap the past season with awards, stats and other fun facts. This week let's announce our All Greater Cleveland honorees:

All Greater Cleveland Honorable Mention:

Christine Gates (Sr.)

Kailey McClain (Sr.)

Emily O'Connor (Jr.)

Sarah Nasr (Soph.)

Parents are always curious as to the process for selection of post season awards. A quick overview of this process would be as follows:

Pretty much every organization that offers postseason awards uses a similar method.  The coaches will gather at a formal meeting and will present their nominated players along with season stats for discussion. During the ensuing discussion, the merits of each player are discussed and then a vote is taken to determine the 1st team and 2nd team selections.

You will only nominate your best players because you need to get the other coaches to agree that "Sally Soccer" is worthy of 1st team or 2nd team status.  The other coaches will let you know that they won't vote for a player who they don't think is worthy.  They know who the better players are from coaching against them over multiple seasons.  So, when a player does get selected for 1st or 2nd team it is a real honor because you are voted in by other coaches who are familiar with the player and recognize the skill level of that player. It is not just your coach forcing his players through.  Of course, the better record a team has, the higher the number of players they can get recognition for.

With honorable mention, the coaches are pretty much allowed to select their own players that they want to recognize.  So that is how it works in a nutshell and these meetings do run for hours as the players are discussed and debated so that it is reasonably assured that the best players are recognized.

Lorain County All Star Game:
The Lorain County All Star Game will be held this Saturday Nov. 17th at 2:00 p.m. at Midview High School.  Representing the Shoregals will be seniors Christine Gates, Kailey McClain, & Claire Jones.

Season Stats:
Alright - Let's look at some goalie stats this week:

Abby Rogers:

Saves       41
Shutouts  0
Goals Given Up: 18

Amy Crooks:

Saves      50
Shutouts: 2
Goals Given Up:  20

All Time Records:
For a little fun and to satisfy some curiosity, over the next several weeks we will present our all time record against various opponents.

Rocky River 8 wins - 10 losses - 3 ties - This has been a series which always features close well played games.  River has won the last 3 games to push themselves over .500 against us.

Lakewood 7-0-0 - A rarity - a team that we have never lost a game to. We haven't played them in a few years, but there is always a persistent rumor that they are going to join the SWC.  Based on past history, I would say that we would be happy to see that.

Westlake 7-19-0 - Westlake has had a strong program for decades and we have not had much success against them. An oddity is that there has never been a tie in the 26 games of this series.

State Update:
In Division 1, Congratulations to the Perrysburg girls soccer team on winning the Div. 1 State Championship with 1-0 victory over Mason on Friday night. They have been building towards this for a number of years and finally have reached the summit.  By the way, they were undefeated and untied and finished the season at 23-0!  Also, must mention that Maddy Williams of Perrysburg scored 48 goals this year including the game winner in the championship game. That total is mind boggling for a player who plays a high level Division 1 schedule.

In Division 2, Walsh Jesuit captured their 6th state championship with 5-0 blanking of Columbus St. Francis DeSales completing a 21-0-2 season.

Now, would love to see Perrysburg and Walsh Jesuit square off - that would be a great game!

All Time Records:
For a little fun and to satisfy some curiosity, over the next several weeks we will present our all time record against various opponents.

Avon  7 wins - 3 losses - 4 ties - We started playing Avon on a yearly basis in 2000 and this has become a great rivialry that we used to dominate in the early years, but the quality in Avon soccer has rapidly inproved to the point where they won the District championship in 2011.

Brecksville  0-7-1 - They joined the SWC 8 years ago and we have never beaten them. The one tie in 2010 allowed us to win the SWC championship outright with a 6-0-1 record.

Amherst  11-7-4 - Another SWC rival and 5 of the losses took place in the first 3 years of our program where we went 0-5 against them, but we have been pretty dominate since then.

Regional Update:
Westlake played Medina on Thursday of last week after the effects of Sandy had moved on.  Medina ended up defeating Westlake on a shot from 30 yds. out in the first overtime period.  Medina then went on to be defeated by Northwest Ohio power Perrysburg 2-0 on Saturday which advanced to the State final four.

In Division II, Rocky River put up a great fight but were defeated by state power Walsh Jesuit 2-1 who has moved on to the State final four.

Strongsville is also still alive as they won a Regional championship with a 4-1 victory over Solon.  The Mustangs will next face undefeated 20-0 Perrysburg on Tuesday.
