News for the Week of March 28, 2011

Program Notes for the Week of 3/28/2011:

Soccer meetings have been held with the players over the past few weeks and I would encourage you to follow up with your daughters on what the coaches communicated at those meetings and what areas were identified for improvement.  You want to be able to put your daughter in the best possible position to earn a spot on one of the teams this fall.

Last week everyone should have been e-mailed the college prep guide and we are going to continue along the college recruitment theme over the next few weeks.  Once again, I would like to remind everyone of the program that ALHS is putting on entitled "The Student-Athlete and College Recruiting" on Monday April 18th at 7:00 p.m. in the ALHS Performing Arts Center.  This is another resource for people to get more information about scholarships and playing sports in college.

I am also going to reprint below the part of our College Prep guide that has to do with College soccer summer camps:

The College soccer camp is a tremendous opportunity for your daughter to display her soccer skills in front of prospective coaches. These camps are a win-win situation for the athlete and the school. Because of severely limited recruiting budgets for women’s soccer, it is nearly impossible for coaches to see a large pool of candidates. This is a major reason why they run summer camps – to bring the recruits to them. Remember also, that they are limited in when they can contact a player and the number of contacts they can have with a player. Generally, college coaches cannot have contact with prospective players until the summer before their Senior year and then the contacts are of a limited number based on NCAA rules.

However, the player can have unlimited contact with coaches at any time starting in their Freshman year as long as they initiate the contact through such methods as filling out the specific sport questionnaire for each college, sending the coach results from their season, informing them of upcoming tournaments they will be playing in, making college visits and by attending summer camps. The advantage to the players is that they get to display their skills to coaches over an 8-12 hour period over the course of 3-5 days plus personal contact. This is much more beneficial than having a coach come to one or two 80 min. games against possibly suspect competition where you are being substituted for frequently. In addition, the girls are hopefully improving their skill set at these camps by playing against higher level competition and learning college level techniques. If you are expecting college coaches to wander into Memorial stadium to see your daughter, this is not realistic. You have to put yourself in front of the college coaches and be very persistent at it. You have to make college coaches want to recruit you, not wait on them to recruit you.

Like everything else in the recruitment process, you need to focus in on the schools where you believe you have a realistic opportunity to play and then attend their summer camp. Now, which colleges run these summer camps? The following is a list of the schools in Ohio which are hosting camps this summer for high school aged players:

Miami Univ.                                 Div. 1
The Ohio State Univ.                   Div. 1
Univ. of Cincinnati                       Div. 1
Univ. of Dayton                          Div. 1
University of Akron                    Div. 1
Kent State Univ.                        Div. 1
Youngstown State                     Div. 1
Ohio Univ.                                Div. 1

Capital Univ.                            Div. 3
The College of Wooster           Div. 3
Hiram College                          Div. 3
Ohio Northern Univ.                Div. 3
Wittenberg Univ.                     Div. 3
John Carroll Univ.                   Div. 3

Cedarville Univ.                     NAIA
Ursuline College                    NAIA

In addition, all Big Ten schools have soccer camps along with major schools such as Notre Dame, Marquette, and Pitt. In fact, every major conference D-1 school has a camp and you can access information on any camp through the college’s website.

You need to start making your summer plans now as these camps fill up quickly. Also if you select a camp, be sure to fill out the school’s soccer questionnaire and express your interest in playing at “ABC” college so they are aware of you when you come to camp.

A new development that has sprung up this year at many colleges is something known as the “College ID camp”. These are one day clinics held at the particular college in which the girls receive a day of college level soccer training and the coaches have the opportunity to initiate the recruiting process. Girls that they “ID” would certainly be invited to attend their summer soccer camp and the coaches will keep certain girls on their “watch” list. These ID clinics are held in the Winter/Spring and some colleges have already held theirs. So, if you are interested in a particular college, check their website and be sure to get an early start on this next year.

Program Notes for the Week of 3/21/11:

Shorepal Meeting:
The next meeting for the Shorepals has been scheduled for Thursday April 14th at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Firehouse which is located at the corner of Lake Rd. and RT. 83.   At the meeting, we will be reviewing our programming for the 2011 season.  The following is a list of the areas where we will need parental help:

1) Concession stand – we need both someone to coordinate the stand during the season and someone to purchase the food items.

2) Father’s Day Tournament – the FD wil be held this year on June 18-19th. We will be working Troy both days and probably Walker on one of the days. We need one or more parents to coordinate the weekend.
Ken & Suzanne Krause have volunteered for this job.

3) Duct Tape Festival – the festival will be held on June 17-19th. We work the 3 days of the festival manning a booth where we sell duct tape and other promotional items. We will need someone to coordinate our volunteers.  Paul & Amy Kress have volunteered for this event.

4) Alumni Game & Picnic – we need someone to coordinate this event which is becoming more popular every year. Projected date is July 10th.

5) Teambuilding Weekend – we will need parent drivers and chaperones for the weekend. Projected date is Aug. 6-7th.

6) Team Dinners – we will need a coordinator to schedule the dinners and for general oversight.

7) End of season party – need someone to host this event. We like to end our season on a positive note no matter what our results.

8) Pictures – We will need a volunteer to help us with both our Shoregal Yearbook and a season highlight disk.

9) Shoregal Yearbook – we would like to continue this tradition for its 5th year. This is a very high quality representation of Girls soccer at ALHS. We also sell ads to make it both self-sustaining and a fundraiser. We will need a lead coordinator and team leaders for each grade.

10) Scouting – John Kenny would like to share this task with someone.

11) Stat Keeper – John Kenny will handle this job again and I will need someone to assist also.

We need lots of help to support this soccer program, so please look these jobs over and let me know where you can help out. I can provide more detail on any job that you may be interested in.

Soccer Site of the Week:
We are going to go in a little different direction this week with the subject matter of our highlighted site which is:

http://www.miamisoccer.com/

This is the Miami University Women's soccer website and when you vist this site go to the "Redhawk Parents" tab.   There you will find an interesting perspective on the role of parents in their daughter's soccer career.   The opinions expressed on the Maimi site are not necessarily my opinion or the opinion of the coaching staff, but it is thought provoking and tries to get parents to put some perspective on their daughters soccer endeavors.  In that respect it is worth reading and it gives some insight on how youth soccer is viewed on the collegiate level.

Program Notes for the Week of 3/14/11:

Soccer Camp Info.
From time to time I will post info. regarding soccer camps that girls may be interested in attending.  The Unviversity of Akron has a player ID coming up as follows:

The Women's Soccer coaching staff will put on a 1 day camp that is open to 8th graders and High School girl soccer players who have an interest in playing collegiate soccer. This is a great way to get advanced training, meet the coaching staff and see the facilities.

The camp will be held March 27, 2011 in the Stiles Athletic Field House from 8:30am to 12Noon. All The University coaching staff will be there to run the camp. The Cost is $45.   To sign up and see more information go to   http://www.ladyzipssoccer.com/

MLS season begins:
The MLS season opens up on Tuesday March 15th with a 9:30 p.m. game which pits the Los Angeles Galaxy vs. the Seattle Sounders.  The Galaxy feature Landon Donovan and David Beckham.  Seattle has probably the best crowd atmosphere in the MLS and features Steve Zakuani who is a former University of Akron player.  Should be a great game to kick off the season.

Soccer Site of the Week:

Program Notes for the Week of 3/7/11:

Fundraising Note:
I believe that Mario Q. has sent out an e-mail about a road race fundraiser for 3/12.  These road races are an important element of our total fundraising package and we need the girls to volunteer to work them.  Other than the early time frame, the work is easy, fun, and they usually go home with a race t-shirt also.  The money that we raise goes right back into the girls program to support the team building camp, Strongsville Showcase, t-shirts, uniform socks, and events like the Alumni game.  We have stayed away from selling items and going door to door and our fundraising events all consist of "sweat equity" activities where we just put in our time and effort to earn money.  We need everyone's help at each event to ensure that we don't have to do the selling of items.  So, check your schedule and be sure to reply to Mario.

Soccer Site of the Week:
In keeping with the conditioning theme at this time of the year, this week's featured site is:

http://www.soccer-training-info.com/

As the name would imply, this site is loaded with info. & videos on skills, strategy, and conditioning.  Once in the site, pick from the tabs on the left hand side to select specific topics.   The articles are written by former players, coaches, and others with appropriate credentials.   An interesting feature of the site is the soccer history tab.
