Game Recaps:
Here is a summary of our 2nd game against Elyria:

AL at Elyria  8/22/16

AL 5   Elyria  2

Goals:
AL - Olivia Siko, Paige Hood, Amber Achladis, Sarah Gee, Allie Heschel

E - Haley Walton, Ja'Maya Ward

Assists:
AL - Amber Achladis, Sarah Gee

E - None

Goalies:
AL - Danielle DelGuidice - 0 saves; Elaina DeMerritt - 0 saves

E -  Kayla Beiser - 15 saves

Game Summary:
What a difference a game can make – in Avon Lake’s first game they were only able to manage two shots on goal, but the offense ignited against Elyria as the Shoregals bombarded the Elyria goal from every conceivable angle to register an astonishing 43 shots with 20 of them being on goal and five finding the back of the net in a 5-2 victory over the Pioneers.

It took a while to get going in the first half, but then Sarah Gee broke through with her first Varsity goal on a pass from Amber Achladis in front of the Elyria goal. Next, it was Paige Hood who struck a free kick from about 23 yds. out to give Avon Lake a 2-0 lead at the half.

Elyria scored quickly in the second half to make it interesting on a goal by Haley Walton in which she dribbled through several AL defenders to find her way to the net.  But then it was all Shoregals as they scored 3 goals in a span of six minutes.  The first came from Olivia Siko who took a pass from Sarah Gee and weaved her way through the Elyria defense to get the eventual game winner.  Then it was Achladis who fielded a clear out ball from the Elyria defense and blasted it right back into the goal. Next Allie Heschel was able to steal a back pass to the goalie which did not have enough pace on it and turned it into an easy goal to complete the Shoregal scoring.  The Pioneers were able to add a goal late in the game when Ja’Maya Ward got free on a breakaway.

In goal for the Shoregals were Danielle DelGuidice and Elaina DeMerritt who combined for the win and for Elyria, Kayla Beiser made 15 saves and got some additional help from the frame as 6 AL shots deflected off either the crossbar or goal posts.

No JV game on this evening as Elyria isn’t able to field a JV team at this time.  A makeup game will be scheduled against Strongsville at a later date.

Game Recaps:
Here is a summary of our 1st game against Oregon Clay:

AL at Oregon Clay  8/19/16

AL 2   Oregon Clay  1

Goals:
AL - Olivia Siko - 2

OC - Alex Vartorella

Assists:
AL - None

OC - Karleigh Clere

Goalies:
AL - Danielle DelGuidice - 6 saves

OC -  Olivia Hornyak - 0 saves

Game Summary:
No matter what you are doing, it is important to get off to a good start and Avon Lake did exactly that with a 2-1 win over host Oregon Clay.  It was the Shoregals first opening game win since 2011 and their first win over Clay in their third match all time against them.

On this day, the ‘Gals were led by senior Olivia Siko who scored both goals for Avon Lake.  It must be something about the air in Toledo as the Univ. of Toledo recruit struck both her goals from 25+ yds. out to catch Clay somewhat off guard.  Her first goal came midway through the first half when she took a throw in, executed a quick turnaround, and sent a rocket (pun intended) into the Clay net. In the second half, the game winning goal came on a blast from 27 yds. out just under the crossbar and out of the reach of Clay goalie Olivia Hornyak.

The Shoregals were mighty efficient as they scored on the only two shots on goal they had during the match.  Meanwhile, Clay was continually attacking on the offensive end and sent 7 shots on goal of which Danielle DelGuidice was able to save six.  The lone Clay goal came off a free kick with 13 minutes left in which Karleigh Clere sent a shot to the goal which DelGuidice was able to block, but could not field cleanly and Alex Vartorella was right there to kick in the loose ball.  Otherwise, the Shoregal defense was smothering as Kellie Norris, Lauren Anthony, Kelly Spitz, Izzy Caputo, and freshman Tayleigh Price had the field covered.  Norris also made a key defensive play in the first half as she blocked a shot headed for an empty Avon Lake net which turned into a harmless corner kick for the Eagles.

In JV action, Avon Lake clipped the JV Eagles’ wings by a score of 2-0.  The ’Gals scored in each half as Adele Osberg tallied in the first and was matched by Erin Litzler who scored in the second. In goal for the Shoregals was Elaina DeMerritt who rang up the shutout.

The Case for Mouthguards:
Another concern for young athletes is whether to use a mouthguard or not. Something to consider - an athlete is 60 times more likely to sustain damage to teeth when not wearing a mouthgurard. The following article presents the case for using mouthguards:
