Rocky River - Jillian Krebs & Abby Elinsky

Goalies:

         Amy Crooks - 0 saves

Rocky River - Sara Connelly - 4 saves

Game Summary:
On a soggy night throughout Northeastern Ohio, Rocky River beat visiting Avon Lake by a score of 2-1 on Monday evening. The Pirates struck for an early goal in the 14th minute as sophomore Jillian Krebs took a pass from fellow sophomore Eva Schneider from deep in the River defensive end and moved quickly past the Avon Lake defense on the left side of the field to score a breakaway goal.  The Pirates were  able to control the action throughout the rest of the half with their speed and possession game and carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.  The score could have been greater
without Shoregal sophomore Sarah Nasr who cleared two balls off the goal line in that first half.

In the second half, Rocky River scored quickly again in the 51st minute on a beautiful header by junior Abby Elinsky off a corner kick by senior Hallie McCue.  It looked to be smooth sailing for the Pirates the rest of the way, but then Shoregal freshman Catie Corrigan took a pass at midfield and dribbled through the Pirate defense to shoot a rocket into the upper left corner of the River net with 11:35 to go for her first varsity goal.  The pace and intensity of the game picked up over the last 11 minutes, but the
River defense was able to hold off the Avon Lake attack including a breakaway in the last minute of the game by Emily O'Connor which the RR goalie was able to smother before O'Connor could take a shot.

In goal for Rocky River was junior Sara Connelly who recorded 5 saves and for Avon Lake the goalkeeper duties were shared by junior Amy Crooks in the first half and senior Abby Rogers in the second half who recorded 4 saves.

In JV action, Rocky River was able to overcome the Shoregals on a second half goal to win 1-0.

Game Recaps:
Another season is underway as we led off with the annual "Golden Shoe" game against Avon:

AL at Avon   8/18/12

AL  1       Avon  1

Goals:
AL -    Emily O'Connor

Avon - Maggie O'Donnell

Goalies:
AL -   Abby Rogers - 3 saves
          Amy Crooks - 0 saves

Avon - Kayla Wysocki - 5 saves

Game Summary:
Avon Lake travelled to Avon for their annual local derby and played to a 1-1 draw in the season opener for both teams.  The two teams played to a scoreless first half in which Avon Lake had the decidedly better scoring opportunities and even had a ball
deflect off the crossbar. In the second half, Freshman forward Maggie O'Donnell scored first for the Eagles at the 60:00 minute mark.  Her goal came after a mad scramble in front of the Avon Lake net on a ball which just eluded the fingers of Shoregal goalkeeper Abby Rogers.  She was assisted by senior Macey Slunski.  Avon seemed to take control of the game after this point, but then Avon Lake junior Emily O'Connor stole a ball in the Avon defensive third of the field. She was able to dribble through multiple Avon defenders to score the equalizer on a shot to the right upper 90 of the Avon goal with only 7:26 remaining.  Afterwards, O'Connor commented “I was
frustrated because I wasn’t getting the shots I wanted tonight so when I got that ball I was determined to make a shot for myself. We were disappointed when we let that one get in but we never got down and kept battling.” Despite spirited play by both teams over the last few minutes, the game was destined to end in a tie.  Last year's game ended in a tie also and there have been 4 ties in the all time series which Avon Lake leads with a 7-3-4 record. In goal for Avon Lake was senior Abby Rogers who recorded 3 saves and for Avon senior Kayla Wysocki made 5 saves.  Another exciting installment of the Avon - Avon Lake rivalry.

The game also featured the coaching debuts of Danie Schnaufer for Avon and Daegen Duvall for Avon Lake.  Not only were the head coaches new, but both teams were hit hard by graduation with 2011 District champion Avon losing 8 players and Avon Lake losing 12 players.  Not surprising with all the new personnel on the field that the game ended in a tie. Afterwards, Coach Schnaufer commented “As long as I have been coach here we have always been a second-half team. I think the girls were just nervous in the first half being that it was the first game and we didn’t have a lot of scrimmages." "I really didn’t know what I had with the defense before tonight,” Schnaufer said. “We have been shifting people into different positions to find out what we needed.” In his first game as the Shoregals coach, Daegen Duvall found a lot of positives in his team’s performance. “Of course it’s not the result you want coming in, but I thought we really dominated the first half,” he said. “We just missed a couple of chances to get a goal. We have a motto on this team - To Be United — and to be able to have everyone contribute is important to us.” He further commented, “These girls have passion for the game and it showed tonight, I could not be any more proud of their effort.”

As would be fitting, the JV game also ended in a 2-2 tie with junior Molly Jeffries and sophomore Kayla Osberg scoring for the Shoregals.

News for the Week of August 13, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 8/13/2012:

Coaching Updates:
I think probably everyone knows by now that Kiko Lopez has decided to resign as head coach of the girls soccer team.  Assistant coach Daegen Duvall will move up to assume the head coaching position for this season.  Kiko had two different coaching stints with the Shoregals covering 5 years.  The first came in 2003 when he coached the team to a 14-4-1 record.  He returned again in 2008 and guided the Shoregals for the next 4 seasons.  Kiko will leave as the program's all time winningest coach with a record of 54-26-9 for a winning pct. of 66%.   He also guided the girls to their only SWC championship in program history in 2010.  Along the way he was named Lorain County Coach of the Year in 2003 & 2008, SWC Coach of the Year in 2010, and Greater Cleveland Scholastic Soccer Coaches Assn. Division I Coach of the Year in 2010.  During his time at Avon Lake, Kiko continued to push the program forward and upgraded the schedule to one of the most challenging in the Cleveland area. Kiko was also instrumental in the growth of both girls and boys youth soccer in Avon Lake through his footskills classes and soccer camps. Kiko is to be commended for his many contributions to soccer in our area.  Kiko will be still be around and will continue to be a supporter of Shoregal soccer as his daughter Mariela is a freshman in the program.  Once again - Thank you Kiko!

Olympic Soccer:
The US women had quite a week as they defeated Canada in a thrilling overtime match 4-3 and then beat Japan 2-1 for the Gold Medal.  The Gold Medal game made history as it was played in Wembley stadium in front of 80,000 spectators for the largest crowd to ever watch a women's game. As usual, the US team was covered in controversy for their excessive celebrations after the gold medal game and also for the T-shirts that they donned after the game.  Most people felt the display was rather unsportsmanlike.  Why, Why, Why? - it is always something with this team. Why mar a terrific game and the greatest moment in women's soccer history.
