News for the Week of March 26, 2012

Program Notes for the week of 3/26/2012:

Shoregals in the News:
From time to time we like to update everyone on some noteworthy accomplishments by our soccer girls.  Here is what our players have been up to lately:

1)  Clare Adams (Fr.) was selected to participate in the Regional Science Fair at Cleveland State University.

2)  Esther Killius (Fr.) and Rada Zunich (Fr.) garnered Honorable Mention at the ALHS Science Fair.

3)  Lindsay Quintero (Sr.) has one of the lead roles as Daisy Mae in the ALHS production of the musical Li'l Abner this coming week Thursday 3/29 thru Sunday 4/1 at the high school.

4)  Emily Peepers (Soph.) won 1st prize at the annual Lorain Arts Council Design Contest for her portrait of the Lorain Lighthouse & Charles Berry Bascule Bridge.

5)  Emily Peepers & Emily O'Connor (Soph.) organized a group of about 14 ALHS students to create portraits for the Memory Project.  The Memory Project is a nationwide initiative for students to create original portraits for children living in orphanages around the world.  Their mission is to give children who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused, or neglected personal keepsakes to honor their heritage and identity and to help build a positive self image.

It is nice to see that not only are the girls successful on the field, but are also great students and good citizens. We are proud to have them as a part of our program!

Coach Daegen also has an item worth noting as he was invited to coach with the 2012 OYSAN Olympic Development Program International Tour to France, Belgium, & Holland.  He will be accompanying a group of 12 & 13 year old boys and girls for training sessions, games, and sightseeing from 3/23 to 4/1.  We are fortunate to have coaches who are respected enough to be tapped to coach at the ODP level.

Soccer Site of the Week:
This week we will start a series of articles from the OYSAN - North site which can be found at:

http://www.oysan.org/Assets/Informed+Parent.pdf

This week's article is entitled "Making the correct decisions about your child's soccer experience".  We don't present these articles as this is what our coaching staff believes or agrees with, we present these as information to consider and reflect upon in the course of your soccer experience with your daughter.

Shorty Sez:
We continue to feature the teamwork philosophies from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski who is a pre-eminent expert on leadership and teambuilding. This week's idea to reflect upon is as follows:

"Leaders instill respect for authority by having a caring attitude, by being direct, by communicating regularly, and by being honest."

News for the Week of March 19, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 3/19/2012:

Indoor Soccer Update:
Winter Session II was just recently completed and we are pleased to report that our Avon Lake II team won the JV division with an 8-0 record.  This team was made up of half freshmen and half incoming 8th graders, so it was exciting to see them blend together so quickly.  Our Avon Lake III team which was made up of entirely 8th graders finished 3rd in the JV division with a 5-1-2 record.  Again, a great job as only loss against high school level competition with a team of all eighth graders.  Our AL II & III teams are playing again in the 3rd session and challenging themselves in a Varsity level divison.  Our Varsity level team was very competitive in the top bracket and finished just under .500.  Can't wait to see these girls in the Fall!

Rules Changes for 2012:
The National Federation of State High School Associations Soccer Rules Committee passed a couple of rules changes for the 2012 season at its annual meeting in January.  These changes are normally adopted by each state HS athletic association.  The first change involves what happens when a player receives a second yellow card. The player will be disqualified and the team will no longer be able to substitute for that player - it will have to play a girl down.  The other rule change involves when a player deliberately handles a ball in her own penalty area to prevent it from going in the goal.  In the past, this would lead to the player being automatically ejected.  Now, the player will only be disqualified if she actually prevents the ball from going in the goal.  If a goal is scored, she will only be cautioned.  These two rule changes won't really affect us much as they have never come into play in one of games, but someday they might.

Soccer Site of the Week:
This week's highlighted site will be the ESPN site for female athletes known as
ESPN-W and it can be found at:

http://www.espnw.com/

This site covers all types of women's sports and female athletes.  Type in "soccer" in the search box and you can filter to soccer stories and bios only.

We continue to feature the teamwork philosophies from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski who is a pre-eminent expert on leadership and teambuilding. This week's idea to reflect upon is as follows:

"Discipline is doing what you are supposed to do in the best possible manner at the time you are supposed to do it.  And that's not such a bad thing."

News for the Week of March 12, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 3/12/2012:

Algarve Cup Wrap-up:
Behind the World Cup and the Olympics, probably the third most important international tournament for women is the Algarve Cup which is held annually in Portugal. The field is by invitation only and contains the strongest countries in Women's soccer. Last week the U.S. squad played in the third place game and defeated Sweden by a score of 4-0.  The championship game pitted Japan against Germany with Germany winning by a 4-3 score.  Next up for the Women's National Team will be the London Olympics this summer.

The MLS is Back:
This past weekend marked the kickoff of the 2012 season for the MLS.  Many opportunities to catch games on both NBC and ESPN.   So, in keeping with the opening of the season, we will make our soccer site of the week the MLS site which can be found at:

http://www.mlssoccer.com/

Here you will find everything you need to know about Major League Soccer with schedules, stats, standings, player bios, and more.

We continue to feature the teamwork philosophies from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski who is a pre-eminent expert on leadership and teambuilding.  This week's idea to reflect upon is as follows:

"When your goal is to try to do your best, when your focus is on preparation and sacrifice and effort - instead of numbers on the scoreboard - you will never lose"

News for the Week of March 5, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 3/5/2012:

Algarve Cup:
Behind the World Cup and the Olympics, probably the third most important international tournament for women is the Algarve Cup which is held annually in Portugal.  The field is by invitation only and contains the strongest countries in Women's soccer.  The U.S. squad posted wins over Denmark 5-0 and Norway 2-1, but lost to Japan today by a score of 1-0 which prevented them from going to the championship game.  Instead, they will play for third place against Sweden on Wednesday of this week.   Follow the action on http://www.ussoccer.com/

Soccer Site of the Week:
We are going to continue with some soccer parent related stuff and our highlighted site this week is:

http://www.miamisoccer.com/

This is the Miami University Women's soccer website and when you vist this site go to the "Redhawk Parents" tab. There you will find an interesting perspective on the role of parents in their daughter's soccer career. The opinions expressed on the Maimi site are not necessarily my opinion or the opinion of the coaching staff, but it is thought provoking and tries to get parents to put some perspective on their daughters soccer endeavors. In that respect it is worth reading and it gives some insight on how youth soccer is viewed on the collegiate level.

Shorty Sez:
We continue to feature the teamwork philosophies from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski who is a pre-eminent expert on leadership and teambuilding. This week we are continuing with the concept of the fist to reflect upon is as follows:

Coach K sees his team as the five fingers on a hand. When the fingers fit together, they create a powerful fist. When fingers are outstretched, they are on their own and can be easily broken by a fist. So it is with a team - if they play together and unite with a common goal they become like a fist which can always defeat individual fingers which are operating on their own. A great team possesses five qualities - Communication, Trust, Collective Responsibility, Caring, and Pride. These can also be thought of as individual fingers and when all five come together, they can form a fist which cannot be beaten.

This week we look at the final quality which is Pride - Coach K believes that pride means that everything we do has our own personal signature on it.  So we want to do it as well as we possibly can.  When you make a pass, it had better be good because it is your pass, it is the representation of you as a player, same with taking a shot or playing defense.  When everyone on the team believes that their own personal signature is on everything the team does - then you have the chance to be a great team.
