News for the Week of March 12, 2012

Program Notes for the Week of 3/12/2012:

Algarve Cup Wrap-up:
Behind the World Cup and the Olympics, probably the third most important international tournament for women is the Algarve Cup which is held annually in Portugal. The field is by invitation only and contains the strongest countries in Women's soccer. Last week the U.S. squad played in the third place game and defeated Sweden by a score of 4-0.  The championship game pitted Japan against Germany with Germany winning by a 4-3 score.  Next up for the Women's National Team will be the London Olympics this summer.

The MLS is Back:
This past weekend marked the kickoff of the 2012 season for the MLS.  Many opportunities to catch games on both NBC and ESPN.   So, in keeping with the opening of the season, we will make our soccer site of the week the MLS site which can be found at:

http://www.mlssoccer.com/

Here you will find everything you need to know about Major League Soccer with schedules, stats, standings, player bios, and more.

Shorty Sez:
We continue to feature the teamwork philosophies from Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski who is a pre-eminent expert on leadership and teambuilding.  This week's idea to reflect upon is as follows:

"When your goal is to try to do your best, when your focus is on preparation and sacrifice and effort - instead of numbers on the scoreboard - you will never lose"

-- Coach K

St. Paddy's Day:
Happy St. Patrick's Day to all and beware of green beer!!   For those who love Irish music, every St. Patrick's Day which is on Saturday this year, WJCU at 88.7 FM plays 18 hours of continuous Irish music from 6:00 a.m. to midnight.
